In the last couple of days, there have been numerous unsubstantiated allegations of plagiarism against two faculty members of Amirkabir University of Technology (AUT). The basis for these allegations is that a paper published in 2008 in the Journal of Electromagnetic Waves and Applications by a person named Mehdi Dehghan is a carbon copy of an original paper published in 2004 by a faculty member at the Ryerson University. The news articles incorrectly assumed that this individual is a professor at AUT. Even though the original allegation has been rescinded, the article has been amended, and the news outlet has apologized to AUT faculty members, the following points are still noteworthy to refute those allegations and clarify the confusions:

1. Amirkabir University of Technology and its faculty, staff, and students strictly adhere to the highest standards of academic conduct. As such, they have never committed or been involved with plagiarism and strongly condemn it in any way, shape or form.

2. AUT community invites all impartial individuals to pay close attention to the authors’ names and their affiliations listed on the first page of the plagiarized paper (see below). As can be seen, the first author is listed as M. Dehghan with the Department of Electrical Engineering, Engineering Faculty, Islamic Azad University, Science and Research Branch, Tehran, Iran. The second author is listed as P. Derakhshan-Barjoei from the Department of Communication Engineering, Engineering Faculty, Islamic Azad University Naein Branch, Isfahan, Iran. At no place in the plagiarized paper is there any reference, directly or indirectly, to Amirkabir University of Technology.

3. It appears that M. Dehghan (listed as the first author of the plagiarized paper) has been a master student in Islamic Azad University, Science and Research Branch and has no connection whatsoever with AUT.

4. There are two faculty members by the name “Mehdi Dehghan” at AUT. One is a professor of Mathematics and Computer Science Department and the other one is an associate professor of Computer Engineering and Information Technology. Neither one of these two individual works in the field of Electromagnetic Waves.

5. None of the two professor Dehghans have ever met, known, or been involved with either Mr. M. Dehghan of Islamic Azad University, Science and Research Branch (the first author) or Mr. Derakhshan, also from Islamic Azad University Naein Branch, Isfahan, Iran.

6. The writer of the article in the Toronto Star has accused these two individuals and the entire AUT academic community of plagiarism only on account of the similarity of their names with that of the real culprit, prematurely pointing a finger at them. AUT finds this neither ethical nor professional. Needless to say, this grave mistake has significantly damaged these professors reputation among the research community, websites and social networks groups.

7. AUT reserves its rights to pursue this matter legally to restore the integrity and reputation of its faculty, staff and students.
