Abstract:

The huge cost required to establish and maintain foundries for manufacturing integrated circuits has been the main driver for separating the design phase from the manufacturing phase of the integrated circuits. This separation has brought two security concerns regarding the production of digital circuits. The first one is the threat of hardware Trojans that can be maliciously inserted into the designs. The other concern is overproduction of integrated circuits in which excess chips are illegally produced and sold in the market. The goal of this thesis is to address these security concerns and cover the limitations of current solutions. In doing so, cyclic combinational circuits are deployed in securing the designs. To detect hardware Trojans, latch-based structures are proposed in which the delay of Trojan-susceptible paths are compared with the delay of other paths in the design to catch any abnormal extra delay. Not dependence to golden models and considerable increase in detection resolution are two important advantages of the proposed approach. To prevent overproduction, key-based designs are proposed in which critical race conditions are introduced in the specification of the designs. In contrast to current approaches, which are also known as active metering approaches, the proposed technique is capable of embedding watermarks in the design as well as establishing multiple activation keys which can be helpful in different security applications.
