Abstract: The fractional guard channel policy (FG) is a general call admission policy, which includes most prioritized channel allocation schemes such as guard channel (GC) and limited fractional guard channel (LFG) policies. In this paper, we introduce a subclass of fractional guard channel policy, called the uniform fractional guard channel policy (UFG) and study its performance. Expressions for both dropping probability of handoff calls and blocking probability of new calls are derived. Then it is shown that there is an optimal value for the parameter of UFG which minimizes the blocking probability of new calls with the constraint on the upper bound on the dropping probability of handoff calls. An algorithm for finding such an optimal parameter is given. Then conditions for which the UFG performs better than GC are derived. It concluded that the UFG policy performs better than the GC policy in low handoff traffic conditions
